A 75 year tradition born and bred in the barbecue capital of Texas is set to make a move west, much closer to your custom homes in Lakeway, TX. If you are not able to set aside a three hour window to travel to, eat at, and come back from Lockhart for some of the world’s best barbecue (no overstatement) at Kreuz Market or Smitty’s Market, you’re in luck. Although barbecue once tore this family in two, it’s now being reunited by, you guessed it, barbecue!

A feud among the descendents of Edgar Schmidt, former owner of Kreuz’s, erupted and ended in 1999 with Kreuz’s moving across town and Smitty’s opening in its place. Years after the issue was resolved, the only thing people remember is their disagreement. Keith Schmidt, the current owner of Kreuz, John Fullilove, the pitmaster of Smitty’s, and Susie Schmidt-Franks, who once cleaned tables as a kid at Kreuz, decided to open Schmidt Family Barbecue just outside Austin in Bee Cave, TX. Located across Hwy. 71 from Falconhead West, Schmidt Family Barbecue, named in honor of grandfather Edgar Schmidt, will provide the Texas Hill Country with Lockhart quality barbecue without the long drive.

It’s still unclear when Schmidt Family Barbecue will open since the terms of their lease are still in negotiations, but we will keep you updated. At Sterling Custom Homes, we are definitely looking forward to having Lockhart barbecue only 15 minutes away. For many of the barbecue connoisseurs in our office, being this close to excellent barbecue is dangerous but it’s a challenge we are willing to accept.
