In many of the new homes in Austin built by Sterling Custom Homes, there are a variety of different flooring surfaces available to suit different homeowners preferences. There may be a wood floor in the study that flows elegantly into a travertine floor in the gallery, or a stone tile surface that meets hardwood flooring in the living room.

Sterling Custom Homes will often have to drop the slab in certain areas of the home to accommodate for the mud-set used to install tile or the plywood that is placed beneath a wood floor. The drops are about two inches and can create a bit of a walking hazard until the flooring is placed.

Applied beneath the tile, mud-set allows for us to “float” the surface to assure that the tile will not make undulations in the slab itself. It also serves as a buffer to minimize cracking in the tile.

So, if you have the opportunity to walk on of our slabs, watch your step.
