More than 30 Austin, Tx museums are participating in the 13th annual Austin Museum Day on Sunday, September 19. This FREE day is hosted by the Austin Museum Partnership and is promoted as a city-wide rediscovery of Austin museums and cultural sites. A sampling of participating organizations includes:

Austin Children’s Museum
The Big Game is the featured exhibit. The entire family will enjoy playing oversized games including jumbo chess, checkers, sudoku, 3-ft. games like Jenga and Connect Four and much more. Storytime is every hour, on the hour.

Sheffield Education Center
Use a video-flex microscope to look closely at some of the amazing macro invertebrates that live in Barton Creek. Learn conservation efforts that you can use to protect our water and environment. Observe a Barton Springs salamander up close and personal in its natural spring habitat. Presented by City of Austin staff from the Sheffield Education Center and the Austin Water Utility.

Austin Steam Train Association
Discover what is was like to travel during the golden age of railroading with a visit to our living museum! Experience the majestic interior of a fully restored excursion train which dates back to the 1920s and 1950s. Our Alco RSD-15 diesel is the last operating example of its kind, and all of our rail cars traveled across the country during the heyday of passenger railroads!

Goodwill Computer Museum
The Goodwill Computer Museum is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of vintage computer equipment. For museum day we will highlight the function of an electromechanical relay computer. The relay computer will allow volunteers to demonstrate basic digital logic and electronic principles that exist in every computing device today.

Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms
Enjoy historical reenactments, new exhibits, and site tours. You’ll find five themed historic areas to explore: an 1840s Tonkawa Encampment, an 1860s German Immigrant Farm, an 1870s Texian Farm, an 1880s Cotton Planters Farm, and an 1890s Sprinkle Corner rural village. In each area you can see and smell real Texas history first-hand.

Neill-Cochran House Museum
Go back in time and join us for ice cream, cookies, and lemonade on the veranda, expert Civil War re-enactors, period vignettes, and our new Cochran-family installation. And – as always – a surprise!

Texas Music Museum
Guided tours of new exhibit and live music performances by Austin musicians from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Texas Natural Science Center
Get prehistoric at Family Fossil Fun Day! Fossil identifications, hands-on presentations by paleontologists, storytime, fossil dig pit, and paleo-themed crafts and activities. Explore the amazing world of fossils with your family!
